Afghanistan - 87 Percent of Women Face Acts Of Violence

The Minister of Women's Affairs Dilbar Nazari said on Monday that 87 percent of the women in the country somehow face instances of violence.
"Deprivation has caused a lot of threats for women across the country, we have witnessed bitter events including poisoning, throwing acid on girls, sexual abuse, immolation of woman and young girls, stoning and rape allegations and accusations of them running away from home," said Nazari.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Mohaqeq has reaffirmed government's commitment to combating the trend.
"We must all call on our families, civil society, government institutions, activists and all to take initiatives and implement it," said the CEO's first deputy Mohammad Khan, while referring to the law preventing violence against women.
"When you give someone an opportunity, he demonstrates his ability, so I favor women show their abilities in all sectors and that they are respected and their rights are given to them," said Mohaqeq.
Both officials said that alongside men, women have equal rights.
In addition to this, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) has said that lessons pertaining to the protection of human rights must be taught at schools.
Addressing a gathering marking the end of 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women, Nazari talked about events of violence which have happened to women in the country and said almost 50 percent of women in Afghanistan deal with teenage marriages which is a serious issue.
"We are edging to the end of the campaign at a time that there are women who lose their lives because of a lack of medicine and food at hospitals," said AIHRC commissioner Qadria Yazdanparast.
This comes after the Afghanistan Attorney General's Office (AGO) recently announced that it had registered around 3,000 cases of violence against women in the country this year.
The 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women started on November 25 and ended on Saturday.
16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is a campaign aimed at galvanizing action to end violence against women and girls around the world.

Taliban demands for cash stir fears of comeback in Pakistan's Swat Valley

By Asad Hashim

When Pakistani shopkeeper Abdur Rahim's phone rang in mid-October, he was shocked to hear the voice of a senior militant commander demanding protection money from him and his fellow traders in the Swat Valley.
The menacing call was taken seriously in a northern pocket of the country where Pakistani Taliban insurgents took partial control in 2007, before being ousted two years later in a major military operation hailed as a telling blow against Islamist violence.
Locals fear that recent threats of extortion and a spate of targeted killings earlier this year mark an attempt by the Taliban to regain a foothold in the picturesque, mountainous area they once ruled with an iron fist. Western powers, including the United States which has thousands of troops fighting other militant groups across the nearby border in Afghanistan, want to see jihadi networks along the frontier crushed.
During the Oct. 19 conversation, Mullah Akhtar, a commander close to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Mullah Fazlullah, ordered Rahim to collect money from 15,000 members of the Swat Traders' Federation, of which he is president.
But in a tense exchange, Rahim refused to cooperate, and told Akhtar militants were not welcome in Swat.
According to Rahim, Akhtar boiled over with rage: "I will blow you up, so that even the doctors won't be able to find the pieces."
Since the call, Rahim's life has changed.
Speaking to Reuters in Swat's main town of Mingora, he stood flanked by two armed policemen, while plainclothed officers keep a watchful eye in the background. CCTV cameras monitor his home.
MOTIVES UNCLEAR
Representatives of the militant movement could not be reached for comment on their tactics in Swat Valley; some residents believe demands for money and a rise in attacks in the first half of the year are signs of desperation.
Attacks have been a part of life there since 2010, including the attempted assassination of Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai in 2012, but in recent months the murders have stopped after a series of arrests by police. The Taliban have also struggled to build ideological support after their bloody two-year rule that saw them impose a harsh version of Islamic law on the valley's 2 million residents. The group remains active elsewhere, however, particularly in southern Baluchistan province, where a faction of the Taliban and Islamic State have claimed responsibility for a series of bomb and gun attacks that have killed more than 180 people.
The Pakistani military will be desperate to keep the Taliban out of Swat, the first sizeable region outside lawless tribal areas bordering Afghanistan to fall to the militants. The army's publicity wing did not respond to requests for comment on the situation in the area.
The military has been on alert for signs of a Taliban resurgence as it seeks to rebuild civilian institutions and win over the local population as a bulwark against radical ideology. A force of more than 4,000 Pakistani soldiers is stationed in Swat, and last month the army began constructing a permanent garrison. "It (Swat) was always shown as the example of a successful military operation," said Zahid Hussain, a security analyst. "But the main challenge is to hold that area, and to now establish a civilian authority."
NEUTRALIZING SUPPORT NETWORKS
While officials tout the recent drop in assassinations by the Taliban as progress, locals on the group's hit-list are less sanguine. Powerful tribal leaders, especially those who worked with anti-Taliban peace committees, say they are in danger.
Fazal Wahab, for example, walks through Mingora's bustling market hiding a pistol under his coat and wearing a black anti-pollution face mask to hide his identity.
"I have received no support of any kind from the army," said Wahab, who has faced Taliban death threats for years due to his work.
But local officials say security has improved.
More than 2,000 Taliban fighters from Swat have been driven into mountainous areas on the Afghan side of the border nearby, according to officials. Police in Swat said TTP assassins used little-trodden mountain passes between Afghanistan's Nuristan and Pakistan's Chitral regions to sneak into the valley. "It's not difficult for one or two people to slip through," said Akhtar Hayat Khan, Swat's police chief.
Khan said several intelligence-led swoops on local facilitators had disrupted the Taliban's support network and limited the threat. In July, police arrested at least 12 people across the valley suspected of aiding attacks.
"DOG EAT DOG"
Local traders applauded Rahim's stand against the Taliban, but some were not sure if they would follow his example if faced with demands for protection money themselves. "If we get a call, then what can we do? We will bear the decision like a stone on our hearts, but we have no choice," said Nisar Ahmed. Rahim is steadfast in his resistance. Recently he started breeding dogs, widely considered unclean in Islam, for his own protection.
"I used to hate keeping dogs. But you need to keep a dog to fight a dog," he said. "They (the Taliban) are hungry now. And like a dog bites a man out of hunger, they're biting, too."

Panama scandal tarnished judiciary’s image: Bilawal

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Sunday that the Panama Leaks scandal had tarnished the image of the judiciary.
He said the Panama Leaks issue had damaged the judiciary more than the executive and the parliament. “Panama leaks tarnished reputation of judiciary more than executive or Parliament. Our system is broken. We must work together to fix it,” he said in a tweet.
His words came as the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing in the Panama Leaks case till the first week of January. Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, who was heading a five-member SC bench hearing the case- will retire on December 30 and will be replaced by Justice Saqib Nisar. A new SC bench will hear the case after the new chief justice takes the oath. The Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf has hinted to take to approach masses if they did not get justice. Justice Jamali has, however, said the courts cannot issue verdicts to please everyone. He said that pressure on courts was unacceptable.
The Supreme Court is hearing Panama Leaks case involving Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family for having off-shore properties.
Bilawal has already given an ultimatum to the government to accept his four demands - immediate appointment of a permanent foreign minister, implementation of an all-party passed resolution on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor’s western route, passage of the draft Panama bill and reconstitution of the parliamentary committee on national security – by December 27 or the party will launch an anti-government protest campaign.
The PPP chairman has also formed a “four demands implementation committee” headed by former premier Yousaf Raza Gilani.
The Sharif family landed in trouble after leaked documents from the Mossack Fonseca law firm revealed in April that that the prime minister’s sons Hassan Nawaz Sharif and Hussain Nawaz Sharif and daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif, own at least three offshore holdings registered in the British Virgin Islands and these assets were not mentioned on his family’s wealth statement. The leaked documents identified the firms as three British Virgin Islands-based companies Nescoll Ltd, Nielsen Enterprises Ltd and Hangon Property Holdings Ltd, incorporated respectively in 1993, 1994 and 2007.
There were allegations that these companies had been used to channel funds to acquire foreign assets, including some apartments along Park Lane in London’s Mayfair area.
PM Sharif and his family maintain they had done nothing illegal but opposition parties claim the Sharif family had siphoned off billions of rupees out of the country illegally.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz senior leader Tehmina Doltana said the premier and his family have presented themselves for accountability but some opposition politicians were unnecessarily creating hype.
“The PM is ready for his accountability even though his name is not mentioned in the Panama Papers or any other corruption case. He has also offered his family for a fair accountability. The opposition should wait for a verdict from the Supreme Court. We should not create an undue hype,” she said.
Doltana said the government wanted to work for the prosperity of the nation but the opponents were hell bent to drag the country to uncertainty. “They should wait for the 2018 elections to know their popularity. They should also have faith in Supreme Court,” she added.

BILAWAL HOUSE SPOKESMAN LASHES OUT AT THE STATEMENT OF INDIAN HOME MINISTER RAJNATH SINGH

Bilawal House spokesman has lashed out at the statement of Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh for threatening to divide Pakistan into ten and warned him that India under Modi will disperse into a hundred states due to worst atrocities against Muslims, Kashmiris Dalits, Christians, Adivasis, tribals and other communities.

“Instead of thinking evil for Pakistan and our people, Rajnath Singh and his ALIBABA and 40 thieves should stand accountable to entire humanity and the international community for ruthlessly practicing world’s oldest apartheid and holding hostages the Dalits, Muslims, Christians, Adivasis, and tribals,” said Surendar Valasai spokesman of Bilawal House in a statement today.

The spokesman said that there was complete unity and integrity among all Pakistanis and no enemy should cast a jaundice eye against our country and the PPP, its leadership, workers, our soldiers and entire civil society would guard our sovereignty with iron strength.
He said that some Indian politicians were trying to befool their own people and frightening them from Pakistan but history will prove that people of both the countries want peace and harmony.

Spokesman said that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has started leading Pakistan from the front, and with the support of entire nation, he would defeat all the enemies of the country in or out of the country.

Surendar Valasai said that Indian government should allow right of self-determination to the people of Kashmir to settle the issue instead blowing threatening bubbles for a permanent peace in the region.

Pakistan: Authorities seal Ahmadiyya mosque to appease out of control Sunni Fanatics

Punjab government's hard-handed tactics against the Ahmadiyya community

The provincial authorities sealed an Ahmadiyya mosque earlier today after it came under attack by an extremist Sunni mob armed with guns, batons and stones in the town of Dulmial in the Punjab Province of Pakistan.

Several dozen members of the besieged minority community were barricaded inside the building as the crowd swelled outside shouting anti-Ahmadiyya slogans and then started firing and throwing rocks and stones into the building.

According to sources, the local police was too slow to react and when the mob size grew out of control, cops simply opted to render the Ahmadiyya property out of commission instead of guaranteeing security and freedom of worship for Ahmadis.

The attack comes on the heel of a police-organized attack on the Ahmadiyya community headquarters in the town Rabwah on December 5th which has drawn worldwide condemnation for the Punjab government's hard-handed tactics against the Ahmadiyya community in Pakistan.

Dulmial village is located approximately 150 kilometres south of the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
