Pakistan Air Strikes 'Kill At Least 44 Militants'

Pakistan's military has said that at least 44 militants were killed in the latest air strikes in the country's lawless tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.

The air strikes targeted Taliban strongholds in North Waziristan and Khyber district's Tirah Valley, the military said in a May 2 statement.

The statement said air strikes killed 28 militants in the Tirah Valley, while 16 others were killed in North Waziristan.

The army's claim could not be independently verified because Pakistan’s mountainous tribal areas are off-limits for journalists.

The air strikes were part of a massive offensive that was announced in June 2014 after a deadly Taliban attack on Karachi International Airport brought an end to faltering peace talks between Pakistan's government and Pakistani Taliban factions.
