Afghan election on brink of collapse as Abdullah-Ghani talks fail

According to reports, negotiations between presidential candidates Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai ended with no result on national unity government formation.
An official in Dr. Abdullah’s camp has said they will announce their fianl stance regarding the election process today.
Dr. Abdullah Abdullah’s electoral camp warned Sunday that declaration of a parallel government is an option if talks between the two candidates fail.
Dr. Abdullah and Dr. Ghani agreed to form a unity government and abide by the outcome of comprehensive vote audit during US Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit to Kabul in July.
The US President Barack Obama also called on Dr. Abdullah and Dr. Ghani to complete a power-sharing deal as soon as possible so the country can form a new government.
Obama called the two contenders on Saturday to emphasize on the importance of concluding a deal on the national unity government as soon as possible in the interest of shoring up international support for Afghanistan and preserving Afghan stability.
